31/10 The Great Adonis Lucero

Hello to everyone. I am home in sunny California. It is 2 weeks since I arrived and finally settling in. Still unemployed…It is amazing how far your Australian Dollar goes. My Girlfriend Katie was pleased to see me (I think), but after 2 weeks I think she is ready to stick me back on the plane to anywhere. I have been spending my time job hunting and staying fit. I lost a lot of weight hanging out with you guys so now I am in my bulking up phase. Katie is feeding me well and I should be able to take on Bopa and Lukie Mac pound for pound when I return.

I managed to come home in time to salvage some of the beautiful California Summer. Temperature has been around 25-30 so all was not lost hanging out in Australia with you guys. As for my outstanding traffic warrant, managed not to get arrested and is now taken care of. No longer a fugitive from justice.

As I had mentioned before I left Australia, my team here Orange County is preparing to travel to Kansas City Missouri on October 19th for U.S. Nationals tournament. All the teams get together and play to see who is the best. Training has been good and we hope to do well. Just can’t seem to get a break from Football.

Congratulations on your Finals victory, Bitter sweet for me as I was happy to be home but would have liked to have been there to share in the moment with you. I tried to call but the only phone number I had with me was Mark Walker, David has all the other Eltham contact numbers.

I also wanted to extend a very sincere thank you to everyone for a wonderful time in Australia. It was truly one of my life’s best experiences. Thank you for your sincere kindness, generosity, hospitality and most of all your friendship. To all of you that I managed to spend some time with and those of you I wish I got to spend more time with getting to know you, the supporters, everyone involved Thank You! Everyone made me feel welcome and part of the club from day one. I learned and experienced so much of the Australian Footy culture and I hope I was able to share a bit of America and me with all of you. You are all a great bunch of people and I hope only good things for all of you. It is nice to meet people but so much better when you become friends. To any of you who choose to travel to the US I extend an open invitation. If you come to Southern California I will do my best to accommodate and help out. As for travel around the rest of the US, hopefully I have some friends here in the states that can help out as well. Keep in touch. Thank you all again, and I am proud to have been a part of the Eltham Panthers 2002. Go Panthers!

Adonias "Donnie" Lucero

30/10 Panther Boys Lift OC Bombers

Hey guys,
Thought you all might be interested to know The Orange County Bombers brought home the National Championship in Division II thanks in large part to the efforts of Dave and Donnie. Dave was voted the B&F for the tournament. I truly believe the experience they brought back from your club played a large part in our success. We were the suprise of the tournament after posting a losing record in the regular season this year we were seeded 5th in the 8 team Division II championships. A real team atmosphere has developed since they came back. An atmosphere that, before now, has never shown itself in the 5 years since the Bombers started. Eltham should share in our success.

Say hello to Swervin' Mervin and the rest of the Eltham Porch Jockeys for me, and hopefully it won't be too long before I can take in another match at Eltham.

Cheers, Chris Olson

30/07 American Revolution Team Coming Soon

Here is an e-mail sent to us from Tom Ellis from Denver prior to the American Revolution team landing in Australia:
I just wanted to get in touch with you and say hello. I am going to be seeing you soon when I come down with the American Revolution. I have played with Donnie and Dave for 2 years with the Revolution and I know you got 2 great players. I can not tell you how much I would love to have joined them on their adventure. I understand that we will be watching some of your games. That will be awesome. I just want to say good luck with the rest of your season. When we get there I think you will see how much we love the game. Anyway take care of the Donnie and Dave till we get there.
Thanks,
Tom Ellis

27/05 Open Letter to Members & Supporters of the DVFL

The Eltham Football Club would like to re-open the debate on creating a third division in the DVFL. In season 2002, the competition has 25 clubs competing, 10 in first division and 15 in second division. The proposal would be to split the fifteen team second division into an eight and seven team competition for season 2003 with the option of a new team joining the league to make eight in third division.
We at Eltham believe that pure competition is suffering under the present structure. Forces such as club ego, pride and status, League lethargy and a misunderstanding of the issues are working against the move into three divisions.

23/09 Richardson Repeats

One of the Club greats in David Streat won the B grade best & fairest narrowly ahead of rovers Michael Iddon and Reid Gardam. David had a sensational middle period with almost five best on grounds in a row before a broken arm ended his season in round 17.

The pace of Greg Strickland and his ability to get the ball saw him win the C grade best & fairest. Josh Callaghan polled well in the finals to come from well back to clinch the 2nd best & fairest trophy and the hard work of Nathan Peck was not lost on the voters and he was awarded with third.

Craig McKay, Dan Prior and Scott Weddell were presented with the respective coaches awards for their outstanding contribution to the teams performance, their preparedness to accept responsibility and their desire to listen and improve.

The top 13 vote getters in each team are as follows:

A Grade B Grade C Grade
Lach Richardson 141   David Streat 86   Greg Strickland 125
Steve Kilby 89 Michael Iddon 81 Josh Callaghan 100

30/07 American Revolution Team Coming Soon

The American team are coming down to watch two of their own play with the Panthers. Dave Thurmond and Donnie Lucero have made a huge impact since arriving the picturesque "Gum Tree Dome" (Central Park) playing fantastic football and making lifelong friendships. A "quiet phenomenon" if there is such a saying. If you know the guys it takes them a bit to get them fired up (unless on the footy field where they're right at home).

03/05 OCBomber Raiders

Donnie has joined Orange County Bomber team mate David Thurmond who has been training and playing at Panther Park since February. The raid from the States did not cease there with Jeremy Kraus, on scholarship with the Essendon Bombers, played an earlier practice match with Eltham against Diamond Creek. Jeremy's club back in the States is the Cininnati Dockers where he had to return after injury stopped short his Aussie schooling. All three have been selected in the All American squad to tour Melbourne 14-23 August this year competing in the inaugral 2002 International Cup (final to be played as a curtain raiser to the Hawthorn v Kangaroos match at the MCG Friday 23 August). Football in the States is getting a real footing with over 35 clubs. For more information, here are some great web-sites to visit. Look for the "Roving Reporter" articles written by David in the Orange County Bombers site or get the early word on the American Revolution team on the USAFL site.

Match Day Reports

07/09 More Panther Silverware

The game opened up quite tight in the greasy and cold conditions, in stark contrast to the previous weeks. The decisive quarter in the match was once again the second when Eltham piled on five goals to one to lead at half time by 30 points. Mernda threw away any chance they had of getting back into the game kicking one goal nine behinds in the third. But through tireless work by community radio 877 commentator Tony Topp’s best afield Steven Kilby in the ruck kept Mernda at bay. By the last change it was all over bar the showers.
It was Eltham’s small players Chris Moyle, Mark Minney and Jimmy Stirton that proved the most difficult for Mernda to handle. Their pace and willingness to put their heads over the ball at all costs was magnificent. And the entire team followed suit providing few opportunities for the opponents to get into the game.
Once again the defence held firm with Lach Richardson again sweeping bravely across half back and providing attack on the rebound. He was aided manfully by Luke Ferns, Matthew Tallack and Kalev Jones. In attack Gavin Neville provided a genuine focal point kicking four goals. But in the end it was Eltham’s courage to attack the ball and feed it out to their runners that brought the silverware back to Panther Park. It’s time to build that trophy cabinet! Well done Wayne Freeman on a tremendous job and the boys. Final score 12-9-81 to 7-17-59.
