Squad named for Community Championships – 5 Panthers named

The Northern Football League has announced its squad for the 2016 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships.

The league has selected 41 players (including five from Eltham) in the squad, ahead of its clash with Mornington Peninsula Football League at Rye’s R.J Rowley Recreation Reserve on Saturday May 21.

All 10 Division 1 clubs are represented, along with Division 2 clubs North Heidelberg, Panton Hill and the Fitzroy Stars.

Division 1 grand finalists Macleod and Greensborough each have six players named, while five players have been selected from preliminary finalist Eltham.

The squad contains 17 players who represented the NFL in its five-point defeat to the VAFA last year.

Heidelberg’s Marcus Marigliani, West Preston-Lakeside’s Rhett Jordan and Whittlesea’s Justin Sherman have been included in the squad after transferring into the league this off-season.

Three-time Greensborough premiership coach Robert Hyde will coach the NFL representative side this year.

He will be assisted by Northcote Park playing-coach Harmit Singh, Macleod assistant coach Richard Geary and Greensborough assistant coach Nigel Sanholm.

Last month, Hyde told NFL.org.au that he was thrilled to be a part of the interleague program again.

“I’m really looking forward to it. It’s got me buzzed up having my own team for a game,” Hyde said.

“Just to be able to train and be in charge of a game again, I’m certainly looking forward to it.”

An announcement on the squad’s training schedule will be made shortly.
